“Winners in the holiday online shopping race appear to be Wal-Mart, Amazon and Apple Computer which are doing the best job of turning browsers into buyers, according to an analysis of Web traffic patterns,” Eric Auchard reports for Reuters. “According to data compiled by Internet measurement firm Hitwise for Reuters, these three sites, along with perennial e-commerce leader eBay Inc., seem to be having the most success converting online window-shopping forays into real purchases. These retailers showed the heaviest traffic between their Web sites and shipping company Web sites at UPS, DHL and FedEx, Hitwise analyst Bill Tancer said… ‘The one site that is driving the greatest growth is iTunes,’ he said of Apple Computer Inc.’s music store, which gives consumers near-instant gratification by allowing them to download songs or gift cards for future purchases.”

“The NetRatings data counts shopping trips to 100 representative online retailers in 10 shopping categories,” Auchard reports. “Hitwise data confirms that half — 49.5 percent — of U.S. Web searches for the term ‘iPod’ are going to Apple Web sites. The next nearest online retailers to be benefiting from the iPod craze are CircuitCity.com, which drew 6.7 percent of iPod searchers and BestBuy, which attracted 4.2 percent.”

There maybe better functionality/price deals for MP3 players available, but the iPod nano probably has the functionality that most music fans will be happy with. We consider the Apple iPod nano very good value.”

So you’re in the lecture hall waiting for the professor to waltz in, and you spot the most beautiful girl ever. What do you do? Clam up and ignore her like usual, or switch iPod headphones with each other (“pod jacking”) and let fate decide the rest? That’s the trend, anyway. It seems young people are making their first moves on each other by using their iPods as a “nice to meet you” apparatus of sorts. Websites have also sprung up allowing singles to mingle via their video iPods. Who knows, maybe if you play your cards right you’ll get to take her to the malt shop or the roller rink. For some wildin’!

I think we all can agree that the bottom half is the more desirable half in a lot of things. Maybe not so much in iPods, though. Why would you want to look at a finely-crafted display anyway? Named the DCT-SDMP3/U, this digital music player will only set you back $25, but you loose a lot of functionality. Like, all functionality. The “scroll wheel” doesn’t really scroll, you need to supply your own SD cards, and it’s only USB 1.1. Still, its small size and imitation aesthetics make it kind of cute in a “choo-choo-choose you” kind of way.

This week, I sent the SO’s pink iPod mini away to Otherworld Computing to get a battery transplant. I decided to pay to have them do it as I’ve had zero spare time this week to do it myself and there was some considerable pressure to “fix” her iPod. I’m sure some of you can relate.

If you choose for them to replace the battery for you, they send you a box with the battery, tool, and pre-filled FedEx form. You pack the iPod, battery, and tool back into the box, fill out the missing portion of the FedEx form, slap it on and away it goes. The only confusing part is that their order form doesn’t really tell you that they are going to send the box, battery, tool, and form so you’re a bit in limbo until the thing shows up and then it makes sense. I know this is how most repairs like this is done (Apple does it this way for some repairs, for instance); I guess I was expecting to send them the iPod first. Well, regardless, the end result is that I’m out of the doghouse because the SO has her pink iPod mini back with a functional battery.

And not just your iPods, either. You can use Hauppauge Computer Works’ new software, Wing, along with its DVR cards and kits, to download shows to your iPod or PSP. In reality, it sounds more like the software just transfers a program already recorded on the Hauppauge DVR on your PC to your device. It’s not really turning your iPod into a DVR. Instead, this is very similar to the Tivo announcement made last month. However, this is for those do-it-yourselfers (like a few of my friends) who have turned their PCs into DVRs.
